The fifty-work ceiling
Kunstmatrix STARTER is not a public gallery. Ten artworks, no public 3D exhibition. The first plan that actually publishes is BASIC: 10 € a month, 50 works, five public shows at a time. Prices on their site are listed without tax.
That is a real product for a small hanging. It is also a cap. Their own FAQ is plain about it: 50 / 250 / 500 is the maximum number of artworks in the account. You can delete and replace. You cannot keep the 51st without moving up the ladder.

Five public shows means five at once. You can unpublish one to publish another. You still cannot store more works than the plan allows.

STARTER is a trial of the tools, not a public gallery. BASIC is the first plan that actually publishes.

Fifty works is a catalogue cap. Two gigabytes is a file-size cap. A working photographer blows past fifty images long before they fill 2 GB. OpenVGal prices exclude VAT and sales tax; full numbers on pricing.
Where each one wins
You run a gallery or an institution, you need inventory and contacts, you want AR on the wall through Art.Augmented, or you need a name curators already know. Performance is solid even on modest hardware. That credibility is earned.
You are an independent artist who already pays 10 €, owns more than fifty works, and does not want the next conversation to be 25 € or 50 €. Folders become rooms. Unlimited pieces. A ZIP you keep. We meter storage, not your catalogue.
Hands-on, their rooms feel packed for a medium with no physical walls. Uploads are one by one, or a CSV you maintain yourself — a physical-gallery workflow dropped onto a solo artist.
What we do not do: AR, VR headsets, a built-in shop, inventory management, sales CRM. If those are the job, stay where you are.
Rebuild from the inventory you already have
There is no Kunstmatrix import. You already have the images. That is enough.
- Sort them into folders. One folder becomes one room; the folder name is the name on the wall.
- Open the builder. Drop the folders in. Walk the result. No account.
- Save a local ZIP and host it anywhere — or publish at a permanent URL we host.
The five-minute version is in the quickstart. JPEG, PNG, or WebP. A desktop browser; phones do not drop whole folders well.
If you cancel our hosting later, export first. The ZIP is the gallery. On Kunstmatrix there is no equivalent file: the exhibition lives in their account.

- What happens when I hit 50 artworks on Kunstmatrix?
- Fifty is the BASIC inventory cap. Their FAQ says you can delete or replace works, but you cannot sit above the plan limit. The next listed plans are REGULAR at 25 € for 250 works and 10 public shows, then PROFESSIONAL at 50 € for 500 works and 50 public shows. Larger packages are by enquiry. OpenVGal does not cap artwork count; hosted plans meter storage only — 2 GB on Artist, 10 GB on Studio.
- Is OpenVGal a Kunstmatrix alternative for independent artists?
- Yes if you are a working artist outgrowing fifty works, or you want a gallery you can export and host yourself. No if you need inventory management, AR through Art.Augmented, sales tooling, or a platform galleries already recognise. OpenVGal does not offer AR, VR headsets, or built-in e-commerce.
- If I stop paying OpenVGal, do I keep the gallery?
- The files are yours either way. Export a ZIP before you cancel and host it yourself — the engine is MIT-licensed and identical to the one we serve. On hosted plans, cancelling keeps the galleries live to the end of the billing period, then they pause, and files are kept for 30 days. Kunstmatrix has no self-host path: if you stop paying, you are on their lifecycle, not on a copy you run.
- Does Kunstmatrix have a free public gallery?
- No. STARTER lets you try the tools with 10 artworks and does not include a public 3D exhibition. A public show starts at BASIC, 10 € a month.
